10.30~Green 5 Goes to Tahoe
Happy Monday! I've barely had a moment to myself in almost a week now and am incredibly sleep deprived, but things are starting to wind down a bit. Saturday was "Make a Difference Day," so Green 5 went on over to a local community garden that was run by the kindest people on earth. The moment we got there, a friendly old man offered us fresh pomegranates that he picked right off the tree. We snacked on strawberries and raspberries in the shade of the palm trees before we began weeding. As we worked, the owners kept encouraging us to take breaks to eat the donuts and fresh fruit they set out for us (obviously I didn't hesitate). It was such a pleasant, easy-going morning. My biggest stress was trying to figure out answers to the riddles Roy was giving us. I have a feeling I'll be solving a lot of riddles in the next ten months.
After lunch, our team was transferred at another community garden that was nothing like the first. There had to be about 100 corps members with all kinds of tools in a large, barren field directly in the sun. By the time we had gotten there, apparently multiple people had already passed out and others had thrown up. At one point I walked to the parking lot to get my water bottle and found a girl sitting behind one of the vans, crying. Needless to say, we were spoiled in the morning at our shady donut garden while others were not so lucky. We worked in the field for a few seemingly endless hours, taking breaks every 10 minutes so we woudn't have a heat stroke. These cargo pants sure do retain a lot of heat, let me tell you. Finally, to everyone's relief, we left the field of death and went to In N Out. Later that night, we decided to do something downtown because it's one of our last weekends here. A few of us went to a quaint little jazz club with live music in downtown Sacramento. It was a beautiful night in so many ways, even if I let it steal even more sleep from me.
Yesterday, we woke up early and drove to Lake Tahoe. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen in my life. The water was emerald green and the air smelled so clean. Mark Twain said "to obtain the air the angels breathe, you must go to Tahoe" and I now I know what he meant. We spent quite some time at the lake, napping, eating, and harrassing seagulls, then hiked around and climbed some huge waterfall cliffs. On the way down from the cliffs, Wynn slipped and sprained her ankle. We all took turns carrying her for about a mile back up the mountain to get to our van. On our way home, we stopped at Applebees and I spent the government's money on spinach and artichoke dip and mozzarella sticks. It was kinda gross and kinda awesome. After applebees we piled back in the van and continued our 2 hour journey home. Bright Eyes played in the car, the clouds looked like lava-cotton-candy, and it was all perfect and good.
